Daily rituals for creativity

Today's blog post is a wee bit of a deeper dive into creativity, and a few recommendations for how you can boost yours.

I didn’t intend to bare my soul today but as I was writing this it felt kind of vulnerable to share how I think and feel about creativity. I hope you enjoy these thoughts around boosting creativity and feeling more inspired.

For me, creativity is a state of mind but also a resource, one that my entire business is literally built upon.

I see it as something I need to protect and something I can feel less or more connected to based on external factors. For me, the antithesis of creativity is stress, brain fog, overwhelm and low energy. Period. So my recommendations around boosting creativity are in turn connected to reducing these creativity killers! Let me know if this resonates with you!

1. Intentional daily stimulation free time.

Sometimes it’s easy to wake up straight away, check notifications, listen to a podcast while walking, scroll TikTok while eating breakfast, listen to music while working, and watch TV after work.

There is nothing wrong with this necessarily but I do think creativity loves spaciousness and there needs to be brain space for ideas to come through.

So going for a 20 min walk, no texting, no podcast, no music. Or eating a meal looking out the window not watching, listening or consuming anything.

Having time to slow down and hear your thoughts.

2. Play a little Mario Kart

For our trip, my partner bought a Nintendo Switch - we never had an Xbox or PlayStation at home so using a controller and playing a game like this is kinda new to me.

But with stress killing creativity, I think it’s important to have a few activities during the day you do purely for fun. Enter Mario Kart. It also requires my brain to completely lock in and suddenly I haven’t thought about whatever was stressing me out in 30 minutes.

It might seem counterintuitive, but by doing things like this, the next hour I jump online I am more productive and creative.

3. Cook a boujee meal (with no fixed recipe if you can)

Something with a couple of different elements that requires thinking of flavours, taste testing etc. It requires being fully present and immersed in the task at hand, which helps me reduce business-based stress and feel a little lighter which in turn helps keep that creativity alive.

I’m aware this may stress you out, depending on whether or not you like cooking… find what works for you.

I would also say these things are an ongoing practice, little daily rituals to create a wee bit more spaciousness for creative ideas to drop in. Little activities that help to feel better on a long term basis and prevent a creative or overwhelmed burnout.
